Richard E. Nilson, M.D.

I will be closing my practice on September 17, 2010 and therefore am not able to accept new patients. Thank you for your interest.

As a general psychiatrist, I primarily treat people with anxiety and mood problems. I work with adolescents, young adults and adults, providing individual reality oriented dynamic psychotherapy and treatment with medication. This form of talking therapy focuses largely on dealing with problems in the "here and now".

People come for treatment with a range of problems. They are often experiencing strong uncomfortable feelings. These include profound sadness, irritability, hopelessness, guilt, and nervousness. They may have symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, low energy, difficulty concentrating or thinking. Many are people who are trying to cope with difficult aspects of their lives. Treatment provides people with relief from distressing feelings and the chance to make significant changes in their lives.

I have been in private practice since 1988. I am employed also by The Wheeler Clinic where I work with adolescents.

I am board certified and was trained in psychiatry at The Institute of Living after attending the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Bowdoin College.
