Therapy WHY THERAPY AND WHO CAN BENEFIT? Everyone faces times of conflict, confusion, and crisis and may have the need to talk to someone about his/her feelings and thoughts. Job changes, divorce, parent-child difficulties, mid-life changes, loss, drug or alcohol abuse: all these can cause us to think more deeply about our experiences and about what we want from our lives. Often these same stress factors can result in depression and/or anxiety. While “talk therapy” often helps, sometimes medications can make a big difference in the level of comfort people experience. Even if people are not in crisis, therapy can serve to help people to be more motivated, make difficult decisions, evaluate problems, and explore changes. In fact, the desire to improve the quality of life, to understand oneself better, and to improve relationships with others are all appropriate reasons to begin therapy. WHAT IS THERAPY? 1) Individual Therapy The therapy relationship provides an opportunity for people to be heard and understood. It offers a time and place to share feelings and ideas. In this atmosphere of trust and safety, people have the opportunity to become aware of themselves, and, with guidance, can find their own answers. Not only can people look at and understand themselves better, but also, they can begin to know their own strengths and to see how life patterns repeat. Once people understand these patterns, they can give themselves the freedom and the power to make choices and changes. 2)Group Therapy Group therapy is a special type of counseling in which a number of people, usually 5-10, meet to help each other by talking together with the assistance of a counselor. Members share personal feelings, ideas, memories, problems, and life experiences with each other. Group therapy provides the unique opportunity for people to learn from others, who are both similar and different from themselves. In this setting, it is possible to examine and change those problematic patterns of behavior, feelings, and thoughts.Group counseling is also thought to be “therapeutic” because the experience helps people realize that they aren’t the only ones with particular problems. In a safe, trusting environment, people learn how other people see them. In addition to giving members practice in expressing themselves, group counseling also helps people understand themselves by understanding others. People often feel less isolated and alone as others offer moral support, useful suggestions, and even constructive criticism. (Please click here to read more about Ms. Kleinman's specific groups.)
